Taking Care Of My Family Through A More Natural Means

Healing my family with natural remedies

Over the years natural remedies and home remedies seemed to have become obsolete and those who practice them are often mocked.

The interesting thing is though, I find natural remedies and home remedies still have an important part in my and my family’s life and this last year really showed me that.

Disclaimer

Let me preface this by saying I’m not a doctor and this is in no way medical advice, rather things that I have learned and have done in my life. All medical advice should be from a doctor and be sure to ask your doctor before trying anything may it be: natural remedies, exercise, supplements, etc.

That being said…

Doctors Have Their Purpose and so Do Natural Remedies

As a whole I think society has realized we need to start making changes in our lives. We have started to try to quit smoking, drinking, trying to cut out unhealthy food, and trying to work out more. Plus, we try to work on our mental and spiritual health and we’ve come a long way.

But for every sniffle, every cough, most of us run to the pharmacy for a variety of pills and liquids. If those don’t work, we don’t bother trying to let our bodies do what they were created to do…we run to a doctor.

Doctors are great and have saved lives every day, but in this day and age we have begun to rely on doctors for every little thing, oftentimes demanding doctors to give us a quick fix for what ails us.

Which is okay, but at the same time from my personal experience the medical industry isn’t what it used to be. Doctors and nurses are not as warm as they once were. They lack bedside manners and are quick to get you in and out. I get the burn out, the aggravation, and exhaustion they feel though.

I have a number of friends in the medical industry. But I’ve also heard the darker side of things too.

I won’t get into the politics that have taken root in the medical field unfortunately, or the abuse that wonderful medical staff faces each and everyday. Not to mention the shortages we saw last year and are faced to see this year.

Sometimes There Is No One to Listen

But I have had a problem with getting doctors to actually listen to me. This led me getting misdiagnosed, multiple times, making my illness worse and causing longer lasting damage.

My point overall is, the medical industry isn’t always a one stop fix. I am grateful that I got help, but it was a nightmare.

Sometimes it does work for us. Other times it is more of a band-aid, and sometimes there is nothing it can do for us for stuff like the common cold.

Medication saves so many lives each and everyday, but it does come at a cost which I had to learn the hard way.

Quick Fixes For Our Health

We live in a world that embraces instant gratification and work. We want to be able to do what we want when we want and illness doesn’t allow us to do that. People want a quick fix. They want a bandage so they don’t have to make real changes.

Plus, people are pushy and demand these quick fixes. They want it now. Medicine and tests make people feel safe. I can’t blame doctors for wanting us in and out quickly and their aloof attitudes.

Now, I don’t say that to scare anyone away from the doctor. Doctors are extremely important. What I’m saying is, we don’t get the care we need and sometimes it is our own fault.

No system is ever perfect and we need to be able to supplement our healthcare when it falls short.

We Are Scared Of Illnesses

I don’t know if it is the rise of healthcare or just because we live so well, but illness terrifies us. Maybe it is because we are so busy every minute of the day…

Don’t get me wrong some illnesses are very worrisome, but we are scared of everything.

Every time our kids get a sniffle we panic. Every time our throat gets scratchy we run to the internet or assume the worst and start panicking because none of us have time to be sick. Or we ignore it and pretend it isn’t happening.

Knowing Your Body and Understanding Natural Remedies

We rely on so many different professionals and companies for our own health that we don’t know our bodies anymore.

First off, we no longer pay attention to the the cues our body gives us. Whether we are actually hungry, thirsty, starting to feel under the weather, minor changes in our skin, etc. We shrug it off and cover it up.

Secondly, we don’t know how to take care of our bodies. We slather all this stuff on our body and put all this stuff in it, because we are told it is good for us, and a lot of it is making us sick.

Thirdly, very few people understand how the body works, nutrition, or how things interact with our bodies. Most people just don’t care, or it has never crossed their minds.

The other half are told everything is fine and they believe it. There is this belief that if something was bad for us we wouldn’t have access to it. Unfortunately, that just isn’t true.

Natural Remedies

There is this misconception that natural remedies and home remedies are worthless and sketchy. People often think that those who use them are crazy. Some people do take it to the extremes, I get it. But nature provides us a lot of medicine and a lot of healing. That is originally where medication started….in nature.

There is a very interesting back story on why that changed if you’re ever interested in a good read.

But, I grew up knowing a few home remedies, we had to use them because we were poor. And in my adult life, I’ve gone a long time without insurance and have used home remedies to stay healthy for years.

Natural Remedies and Misconceptions

Natural remedies and home remedies aren’t really these weird mysterious concoctions most people imagine. I’m sure there are some, but majority of natural healing is not done with bubbling cauldrons and alchemist tools.

They are not always poultices, tinctures, salves, and teas. It is food! Our diet, and our guts, play a HUGE part in how our body heals and reacts to illnesses and toxins.

Herbs have their place and can help, but food is the main way we take care of our bodies.

Taking Care of Ourselves the Natural Way

It’s time, at least for myself and my family, to learn about our bodies more and how nature and food heals a lot of the problems we face. Which is why I started trying to learn as much as I could about all of this.

Things are rough and I venture to say things will get much harder over the next couple of years so I find knowing the remedies of old is very useful and how to eat is important.

I am excited to share this with you guys as well, because I’ve learned so much!
