Let’s talk about what it means to be in an inflammatory state and what you can do to get out of it. If you’re dealing with pain, stiffness, swelling, along with other symptoms that just won’t go away, you may be in an inflammatory state. It can not only cause pain, but cause issues with your bowels and hormones too. It’s frustrating and you feel terrible when you’re stuck in an inflammatory state. Many times doctors will hand us pills to deal with individual symptoms rather than dealing with the root causes. So, let’s take a look at symptoms of being in an inflammatory state and how to get out of it so you can feel better.
When Your Body Is In An Inflammatory State
Inflammation actually serves a purpose. We often see it as the bad guy because in high levels of inflammation can cause chronic issues. But inflammation is the body’s response to illness or injury and will cause redness, swelling, heat, and pain. It’s the way the body tries to protect itself and heal the issues. But prolong illness and injuries can cause prolonged inflammation leading to chronic illness and pain in the long run.

Symptoms Of Being In An Inflammatory State
We talked about the normal inflammatory response which is:
- Swelling
- Heat
- Redness
- Pain
Did you know nearly 35% of U.S adults are in an inflammatory state or have chronic fatigue? But what does chronic inflammation look like? Can we tell if we are dealing with chronic inflammation?
Doctors will do blood tests to see if you have chronic inflammation. They will check our ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) and your CRP (C-reactive protein) which is the way to measure inflammation in the body. But they cannot pinpoint what is causing the inflammation. Now they can do imaging if it’s a specific injury, but most inflammatory states are actually caused by lifestyle choices. Are there symptoms beyond blood tests though? Yes.
They are:
- Fatigue
- Muscle Aches
- Joint Pain
- Weight Changes
- Headaches
- Constipation/Diarrhea
- Rashes
- Hormonal Imbalances
Can You Get Out Of An Inflammatory State?
You can actually. You can do it naturally and you can do it with the assistance of allopathic medication. But it actually requires quite a bit of work and lifestyle changes. You know, the things that people hate doing most. It’s unfortunate that many people would rather take 20 pills then make changes that take away their chronic illness and pain, but lifestyle changes are hard. And we live in a society that doesn’t like hard. So, what do we have to do to get out of our chronic inflammatory state?
1. Change Our Diet
This is the biggest change you have to make, changing the way you eat. Get rid of inflammatory foods. Those are typically allergens, sugars, and processed foods that hold little to no nutritional value or that is hard on the body. We need to eat meats, including red meats, veggies, some fruit. Is it boring sometimes? Yes. Does chocolate cake taste better? Sometimes. Is eating healthier worth not limping and being in agony? I think so.
2. Exercise
There are people who actually enjoy exercising…and I don’t understand them. But moving is important because most of us are sedentary. But moving helps reduce and prevent inflammation and will increase hormones that regulate inflammation.
3. Stop Drinking and Smoking
We all have our vices, but sometimes our vices hurt us. And while a glass of wine can be beneficial, drinking too much disrupts your gut biome which can trigger inflammation. So it’s suggested you have 1 drink a day or less. Smoking actually triggers a lot of inflammation in your body. That doesn’t just mean cigarettes either, vaping also causes inflammation in the body, brain, heart, and lungs.
4. Take Care Of Your Gut Biome
The bacteria in your stomach is so important. An imbalance of some can cause IBS, IBD, psoriasis, chronic inflammation, and can cause your immune system to attack itself. Our gut bacteria isn’t what it used to be as we use bleach and disinfectants on the regular, we don’t get outside and get dirty, and we take way too many antibiotics. Probiotics, prebiotics, and fermented foods benefits us greatly.
5. Manage Your Weight
I know we’re in the era of body positivity, and you should love yourself, however, you have to be at a healthy weight. You need to have muscle and a healthy amount of fat. Obesity is linked to many chronic diseases and causes inflammation as well.
6. Supplements and Herbs Can Help You
Eating fish that have Omega-3 fatty acids can help you fight inflammation. Other things like turmeric and pepper, ginger, green tea, calendula, chamomile, parsley, peppermint, and a number of other herbs can help bring you out of an inflammatory state alongside with lifestyle changes. Have your doctor check your Vitamin D levels. If you’re low on vitamin D you will probably find you have increased levels of inflammation.
7. Allopathic Medication Can Help
I don’t believe in lifelong medication unless absolutely necessary. But if you’re in a severe inflammatory state and you’re working on lifestyle changes there is medication that can help. Microdosing LDN can help or even microdosing GLP-1’s can help. There are others that can help too, but you’d want to talk to your doctor about these options.
8. Get Some Sleep
Did you know 1 in 3 adults in the US don’t get enough sleep. That’s not good. Sleep is so important because it’s when you’re resting when the body heals itself the most. And if you’re not sleeping enough, you’re not healing enough. I know it’s hard, I know many of us don’t want to go to bed early, but it’s important to at least get 7 hours of sleep a day.
9. Reduce Stress
I hate saying this. “Reduce stress” is one of the most frustrating phrases in the world. I know I have to reduce stress, but it’s like “how?!” It took me some time to learn how. But reducing stress can help reduce inflammation in adults. Praying, going to your Bible, exercising, taking up a hobby, intimately loving your spouse, there are plenty of ways you can reduce your stress.
10. Be Aware Of Your Environments And What Is On Your Skin
Our skin is essentially a sponge. What we put on our bodies can effect our health. So is what we’re around, like fragrances, harsh chemicals, house hold cleaners, it can make us sick. I know it’s like, well geez what can I do? But just be aware that a lot of this stuff can cause inflammation too so it’s better to find more natural alternatives.
Getting Our Of A Chronic Inflammatory State Is Hard and Frustrating
I know it seems like you can’t do anything. Have to get rid of perfumes, deodorants, soaps, cleaners, change the diet, move, sleep, stress less. It’s a lot. There is no wonder why people don’t want to make changes. Because it is hard. But our food, our medicine, and our household items aren’t made to keep us healthy. There is no money in a healthy society. Keep people fat, content in their misery, and addicted and you have control.
But I promise you, when you get out of that inflammatory state and you aren’t in pain 24/7 and you feel human again. It’s absolutely a blessing and you don’t want to go back.
My Journey In Chronic Inflammation
I’ve always had health issues, but come 2019 I ended up with multiple bouts of C.Diff and covid. My immune system and gut health was destroyed. I was in my late 20’s, but I lost control of my health. I had psoriatic arthritis, extreme pain every time I ate, weight gain no matter what I did, my period was horrible. My period was lasting 2-3 weeks at a time and coming every 2 weeks. I had chronic potty issues. I was miserable.
I finally found a doctor that actually listened to me and helped me. First we did a fecal matter test to see that I had overgrowth of some bacteria and needed others. So, I started probiotics, eating fermented foods, and raw dairy. I went on the carnivore diet and quit eating all this “healthy” food that is processed and not actually healthy. We also added some microdosing of LDN and I began working out. Within a few months my pain was gone and within a year I lost 50lbs. It was amazing!
It wasn’t easy at all. But that journey was worth it and I’m still on it trying to get my body back to being fully healthy. And I hope you’re willing to take those first steps too.
