Y’all, I don’t know if you’ve seen the newest food trend, but butter boards are apparently the new charcuterie board. It sounds weird at first, but as a butter lover, I was intrigued. And let me tell you, this blackberry orange butter board did not disappoint! If you love salty, creamy, sweet, and tangy, then this is the butter board for you. I dare say, your entire family will enjoy this snack.
Butter Boards
Tiktok is again picking up on trends that have been around for a hot minute, but making them popular. I usually am not one to follow trends, but this is one I can get behind. Whether you’re making a sweet butter board, a savory one, this is perfect for a get together.
Have together as a family snack, breakfast, or have it at a party as an appetizer. Either way, it is sure to impress and satisfy! I mean how could it not! Tanginess of blackberries, sweetness and sourness of oranges, delicious honey, crunchy walnuts, and yes, salty, creamy butter…the perfect combination to eat slathered on French bread.
What Is A Butter Board?
First and foremost, let’s discuss what this is. A butter board is just that, a butter charcuterie. The butter is the main layer and then you top it with sweet foods or you can make a savory butter board with stuff like roasted garlic, basil, Italian seasoning, red chili flakes. And you generally serve it with bread, though I’ve seen some people eat it with crackers.
Are Butter Boards Healthy?
I keep seeing this question, and I’m going to say, too much of anything is not healthy. Butter gets a bad rap as an unhealthy food, when it’s really not. However, I’m not suggesting eating a whole stick by yourself is healthy.
Then you have other toppings that may be sugary sweet or very spicy.
So, I’m going to lean towards probably not, unless you deliberately design it to be, but most foods in moderation are okay.
My Experience With This Deliciously Creamy and Sweet Blackberry Orange Butter Board
Recently, I started making my own homemade butter, and was proudly showing it off when a friend suggested I use it to try to make a butter board. I was very interested. Because like the great Julia Child’s I believe butter makes everything better.
Well she actually said:
With enough butter anything is good.
The Kitchn
And I have to say, I agree. Plus, this not only gave me a great excuse to enjoy more of it, but I also got to eat bread, jam, fruit, and this beautiful orange vanilla infused honey my friend gave me.
How Did My Butter Board Turn Out?
So, did I eat a lot of butter and jam for breakfast? Yes I did, this was delicious! But how could it not be!? Do I have regrets? Nope. Will I eat it again? Probably not this board. I did love it, but I’m ready to try a savory one now!

How To Make Your Super Yummy Blackberry Orange Butter Board
Step 1
First grab your wooden cutting board or charcuterie board and put your butter on it. We kind of smeared ours across the board, but I’ve also seen people do more decorated swipes, similar to how you’d decorate a cake.
Note:
Mine is tiny. I made a mistake when buying a board. I have no concept when it comes to length x width…and that’s if I check specifications in the first place. So, use one a bit bigger than 9×6 it gives you more room to work with.
Step 2
Take your blackberry jam dollop or smear it on top of your butter. I did mine a little sporadically to give room to the other items I was going to put on my board.
Step 3
Do the same with the orange marmalade. Just kind of dollop it here and there on your board. We want enough to make sure everyone will be able to get some.
Step 4
Place your blackberries where you want them. You don’t have to cut them or anything. They kind of get smashed when you get them with your bread. Which isn’t a bad thing at all.
Note:
After zesting your orange, feel free to add orange slices to the board, or mix it into your orange marmalade for a fresher element to the dish.
Step 5
Zest your orange over the top of your board.
Step 6
Sprinkle walnuts across your butter board. I’m not the hugest walnut fan so I sprinkled it fairly light, but it’s a much needed crunchy element to this otherwise sweet dish.
Step 7
Drizzle with honey. Again, I used a flavored honey that was given to me by a friend.
Step 8
Enjoy your blackberry orange butter board with slices of French bread or crackers!
Can Butter Be Left Out Of The Fridge?
To those new to cooking, I’m sure the thought of leaving butter out seems weird. I have known some people who were terrified of leaving it out and would only heat it in the microwave to soften it. And I totally understand, we are told time after time that dairy goes bad quickly.
But according to the USDA butter and margarine (though it can separate) are safe to eat at room temperature. However, if you leave it out for several days the flavor can go rancid. But leaving your butter out for a couple days is safe.
So, if you’re wondering if your butter can be left on the counter to soften, yes it can!
Can You Use Unsalted Butter For Your Butter Board?
Yes, you can! If you’re concerned about too much salt or have dietary restrictions when it comes to salt, then unsalted butter is a great alternative. It’s tangier and creamier many times and can really take on flavors well.
This would be best with strong flavors or super sweet flavors. Think something like pickled, umami, earthy, flavors that really stand out. Or for desserts if you were going to use chocolate, dulce de leche, cinnamon, etc.

I know venturing out on your own when it comes to a recipe can be intimidating, but it can also be fun. A general rule of thumb is to focus on the different flavors like: sweet, spicy, umami, salty, sour, etc.
Think about textures as well. Is it all silky smooth on the tongue? Is there roughage? Crunch?
