Want to learn how to fold your clothes? Not everyone has had someone to teach them to fold clothes, so I got you. These are the very basic ways of folding laundry. I don’t do any fancy rolls, but these basic steps will help get your clothes out of a basket (or off a rack) and folded and into your drawers saving some space. Let’s get started!
Before We Learn How To Fold Clothes
A couple things. My examples are wrinkly. I folded these right off the rack. If your clothes are wrinkled when you fold them, they’re gonna stay wrinkle. So I suggest folding them as soon as they’re done in the dryer or be prepared to iron them when you need them (or throw them for a quick run in the dryer, but that’s not really energy efficient.)
Supplies Needed To Fold Clothes
- Clean clothes
- Flat surface
- Optional: Basket or bin to carry clothes to drawers
How To Fold Clothes
Okay let’s start. What I like to do before I begin is start making piles. That way it doesn’t end up a chaotic mess. I have an area when I am going to put the shirts, socks, underwear, towels, etc. Kind of makes your folding a little more organized.
How To Fold A Shirt – Option 1
Step 1
Lay your shirt out. As you can see, my husband’s undershirt is a wrinkle bomb. But I’ll deal with that later, I pulled these clothes off the drying rack to show you.
Step 2
Fold the shirt in half making sure it’s even.
Step 3
Take the sleeves and fold the sleeves back.
Step 4
Take the top of the shirt and fold it halfway down.
Step 5
Take the bottom of the shirt and fold it over the top.
Step 6
Now you have a nice little square!
How To Fold A Shirt – Option 2
Step 1
Lay the shirt out, but put the front down. I forgot to take a picture of this step, so we are reusing the previous picture…just pretend the shirt is backside up!
Step 2
Pull the first sleeve towards the middle of the shirt.
Step 3
Pull the other shirt sleeve towards the middle.
Step 4
Fold the bottom part of the shirt halfway up.
Step 5
Fold it again so you have a nice square.
Step 6
Now you have a nice square and if you have a graphic t shirt this is a great way to be able to semi see the picture so you know what shirt it is.
Note:
This is how I generally fold dress shirts if I need to fold them. But I prefer to hang them up to avoid lines. I also fold my dresses this way as well. You’ll use this method for hoodies as well, however, when you fold the arms, you’ll be folding the hood down in their direction. So just flip the hood down and then continue folding.
How To Fold Pants
Step 1
Lay your pants out. Again, ignore the fuzz and wrinkles. That’s a later me problem.
Step 2
Fold them over evenly.
Step 3
Fold the bottom up about halfway.
Step 4
Fold them again.
Step 5
Now you have a neat little square ready to be put away.
Note:
You will do jeans and leggings this way as well. Skirts I also generally fold this way too. If you’re trying to hang dress pants, stop at step 2 and slip them through the hanger.
Underwear like boxers and boxer briefs as well as Spanx will be folded this way, just skip step 3 and fold them in half.
How To Fold Socks – Option 1
Step 1
Lay socks on top of each other.
Step 2
Fold the toes of the socks over.
Step 3
Lay the open part of the sock over.
Step 4
You have a small neat pile!
How To Fold Socks – Option 2
Step 1
Lay your socks out.
Step 2
Lay then on top of each other.
Step 3
Use an opening and stretch it over your socks.
Step 4
Now you should have like a pouch for your sock? I’m not sure how to describe this.
Note:
I know it looks like they’re all stretched out, but I’ve never had an issue with my socks being all stretched out. This is how my mama taught me how to do it, and it’s odd, but it works.
How To Fold Towels
Step 1
Lay your towel out.
Step 2
Fold it into a hamburger bun. (Width wise instead of length wise.)
Step 4
Now fold it length wise making sure the edges are even.
Step 5
Fold one side half way across towel.
Step 6
Now fold the other side on top.
Step 7
Now you’re towel is nice and folded!
How To Fold Panties And Briefs
Step 1
Lay the underwear out.
Step 2
Fold the crotch part up.
Step 3
Fold the right hip part towards the middle.
Step 4
Fold the left side on top of the right part. (Like how we did the towels.)
Step 5
Now you have folded underwear!
How To Fold A Thong
Step 1
Lay your thong out.
Step 2
Take one part of the hip strap and fold it towards the middle.
Step 3
Take the other hip strap and fold it over the first side you folded.
Step 4
Fold the crotch up over the straps and you’re done!
Why Learning How To Fold Clothes Is An Important Skill
I hate folding clothes. I won’t lie. I’m disappointed that it’s we are in an era of technology and we have life saving technology, sketchy A.I, but we can’t have a self folder?! It’s fine. But in all seriousness, this is a skill that is important to know.
Not only will it keep your clothes from being a wrinkled mess if you do it right away when your clothes are done in the dryer, but it’ll save quite a bit of space in your drawers. It’ll also save time. You won’t be digging through baskets, the drier, piles, or chaotic drawers and then have to spend time either ironing or throwing clothes in the dryer again wasting energy. Which is good especially if you’re running late.
