Oat Milk Hot Chocolate

So, once I found out I was lactose intolerant I realized I needed to start figuring out alternatives. Which wasn’t a big deal, I have a soy allergy as well so I’m used to cutting things out and making changes.

However, I really love hot chocolate in the winter. I can only have certain brands though, because of dairy and soy. There is a brand from HEB I used to drink and I was excited.

The weather actually got chilly in Texas and I wondered…can you use oat milk to make hot chocolate? So I warmed up some oat milk, poured in the packet, added marshmallows and sat down to relax and enjoy this treat.

I was dismayed, it wasn’t that good…at all. Disappointing and almost sad is how I would describe it, so I decided this would not stand!

I was going to make the best cup of oat milk hot chocolate and I succeeded! Now I wanted to share this recipe with all of you in case you find yourself in the same place I was! If you’re looking for a creamy, indulgent, and decadent cup of hot oat milk coco, then this recipe is for you!

Ingredients Needed To Make Oat Milk Hot Chocolate

Unsweetened cocoa powder, oat milk original, white sugar in a red bowl, and chopped chocolate on a white plate.
You only need 4 ingredients to make this delicious dairy-free hot chocolate.
  • 1 1/2 Cups Oat Milk
  • 9 Squares Hershey Special Dark Chocolate Chopped
  • 2 Tablespoons Cocoa Powder
  • 1 Tablespoon Granulated Sugar
Optional:
  • Coconut Milk Whipped Cream
  • Almond Whipped Cream

How To Make This Delicious Oat Milk Hot Chocolate:

Step 1

Put your oat milk in a pan and set it on low to medium heat. Let it heat up, but not enough to boil. We want it hot, not scalding.

Add your cocoa powder and sugar.

Step 2

Whisk in your 2 tablespoons cocoa powder and 1 tablespoon granulated sugar. I added sugar, because I like my hot chocolate sweet. It’s like a treat or dessert for me since I only drink it once in a while.

Add your chopped dark chocolate to the oat milk and cocoa powder mixture.
Add your chopped dark chocolate to the mixture.

Step 3

Once the powder is incorporated and the chunks of chocolate are gone add in most of the diced dark chocolate and stir until fully melted.

Step 4

When your oat milk hot chocolate is at it’s desired temperature, then carefully pour it into a coffee mug.

Step 5

Add your favorite dairy free whipped cream. I used coconut whipped cream. And then sprinkle some shaved or chopped chocolate on top.

Notes:

A couple notes…

If you want it less chocolatey, add in only 1 tablespoon of powder and use 6 squares of chocolate.

If you want it less sweet then omit the sugar from your oat milk hot chocolate.

This delicious warm drink is sweet and rich on its own. I really like going all out because I don’t actually drink it often and it is more like a treat to me I guess. It’s like having a liquid dessert instead of eating something like chocolate chip cookies or tuxedo Oreos. Either way, I hope y’all enjoy!

Toppings For Your Oat Milk Hot Coco

Not a fan of coconut whipped cream? That’s fine! You can use other toppings to make your sweet drink your own.

You could use:

  • Almond Whipped Cream
  • Marshmallow Cream
  • Marshmallows
  • Candy Cane pieces or sticks
  • Peanut Butter Drizzle
  • Caramel Drizzle
  • Chocolate Chips
  • Cinnamon

Do I Have To Use Oat Milk?

No, you don’t have to use oat milk, you can substitute your favorite type of milk in this delicious oat milk hot chocolate recipe. I’ve actually used whole milk for my husband, as he can still enjoy regular milk.

I’ve used oat milk, because I don’t like the nutty flavor that comes through with warmed nut milks like almond or cashew. I am allergic to soy, so I can’t have it.

But you can easily use almond, cashew, soy, cow milk, goat milk, rice milk, or hemp milk.

What Oat Milk Should I Use For This Non-Dairy Hot Chocolate Recipe?

When I first started drinking Oat milk, I had no idea there were so many different types or brand. Personally, and as you can see from the photo, I just used a regular HEB oat milk. This brand has a sweeter taste and is best in my opinion.

However, I have a friend who also drinks oat milk, and when she tried out this recipe she used barista oat milk. She uses it for her hot cozy drinks like oat milk hot chocolate, tea, and coffee.

You could probably used a vanilla flavored oat milk and skip the sugar and it would add a little more flavor, but I haven’t tried it. If you do, let me know how it turns out.

Sugar Alternatives For This Dairy Free Hot Chocolate Recipe

Trying to avoid refined sugar. I don’t blame you. I go through periods of no sugar to all the sugar, which is terrible, but you can use other sweeteners!

You can use sweeteners like:

  • Maple Syrup
  • Honey
  • Agave Syrup
  • Stevia
