One of my most favorite Bible verses is Psalms 91. It is the most powerful prayer of protection in my opinion and I don’t think enough people know the verse. Psalms 91 is a Bible verse I have regularly prayed over my family and house and one I will continue to use to pray for my loved ones. So, if you’re anxious, scared, or there is illness, violence, or spiritual warfare going on, then I suggest you read Psalms 91 over you, your home, and loved ones.
When I Learned About Psalms 91
It was actually during the beginning Covid in 2020 when I came across an article about Psalms 91. And at that time I was nervous. I had nearly died from C.Diff and suddenly there was a new disease none of us knew about. So during my search for information about the disease I saw a post about not being afraid and praying Psalms 91 over your family.
And as I looked into the prayer I immediately felt better as God gave me supernatural peace and assurance that everything was going to be okay. And it was. But, Psalm 91 is something that I still continually pray over my home and family to this day.

Psalm 91
Let’s look at the actual Bible chapter and I think you’ll understand a bit better why it is so important.
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.
He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;
There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.
Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.
With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.
Psalm 91 KJV
That’s powerful stuff. It talks about pestilence, the enemy, snares, terror, arrows, darkness, destruction, and the protection God will provide us and the reward the wicked will receive. How amazing is our God that He can protect us from so much?
What Is The Meaning Of Psalm 91?
The meaning of Psalms 91 is about trusting a faithful God during calamities and believing that God will keep them save. It is about a righteous person being protected by God who provides the ultimate refuge.
Why Is Psalm 91 So Powerful?
Psalm 91 is so powerful because it is packed with the promises of God. God has promised to never forsake us. And for those who believe and trust God, we can trust that God will save us. God doesn’t have plans to harm us and He loves His children. And if we trust in Him like the person in Psalm 91 does, then we can trust His will be done and His protection over us.
What Is The Secret Place According To Psalm 91?
“The secret place” is actually a Hebrew idiom that represents something done between God and a person. Think of it like you’re going to God and you have this special relationship where in your turmoil He will cover and protect you. It’s a place with just you and Him.
What Was Going On When Psalm 91 Was Written?
It’s actually hard to say, because historians are not even sure who wrote it. They’ve narrowed it down to 3 different people, but because they haven’t figured it out, it’s hard to figure out the timeline. We can gather that perhaps there was war which brings about other things like illness and the such? But that’s just my opinion and strictly speculation. I do feel that perhaps it could also be advice? I really don’t know and my research didn’t come up with any good answers either, so I don’t know. I’m sorry.
What Does It Mean To Dwell In The Shelter Of The Most High?
It means that we are trusting that God loves us and in His power to give us protection and the strength we need to get through whatever we are facing. It’s accepting and trusting that protection and His will.
What Is The Shadow Of The Almighty In Psalm 91?
This means that we live under the promise of the good Lord’s protection. Shadow in this context refers to words like “shade, comfort, protection.” So think of the word before that phrase “abide” and think of it as the word dwell. We will dwell in God’s protection, because obviously God is the Almighty.
What Does The Arrow That Flies By Day Mean?
The arrow can be taken literally, but it also can represent spiritual warfare. Think of the arrow, it pierces, right? And in both cases suggested above, it can pierce physically, mentally, and emotionally. Arrows are sent by the enemy to cause damage. Why do you think in Ephesians 6:12 we are told to take up the shield of faith which will “…extinguish all flaming darts of the enemy”?
What Is The Meaning Of Pestilence In Psalm 91?
Pestilence is disease, plague, and illness. So when they mention pestilence in Psalm 91:6, it is imagery to help describe things that people are fearful of and things people needed protection from.
What Is The Terror By Night In Psalm 91?
In Hebrew the word for terror is pachad. Pachad means the overwhelming fear. Like the kind of fear that leaves your paralyzed, unable to think, move, or speak. So, when Psalm 91 is talking about terror, it’s talking about intense fear. But when you read the book of Job it talks about crime at night which can cause fear. And there are a number of of Rabbis who have interpreted “terror by night” to represent demons and demonic activities as well.
We Do Not Have To Be Afraid and Psalm 91 Shows Us That
It is hard to say not to be afraid, because we are human. But God did not give us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and sound judgement. And Psalm 91 reminds us that we can trust God to protect us and get us through anything we face. It’s an important prayer that we should cling to I think. It is a prayer of hope, trust, and God’s grace. And in the times we live in, I think every Christian should be praying Psalm 91 over themselves, their family, friends, and home. God bless you!
