Homemaking For God

Adventures of Biblical Homemaking and Drawing Closer to God.

Every wonder… who is God? Me too. I grew up a Christian and went to church and I said the prayer to be saved, but as an adult I find myself asking, “who really is God?” We hear all the titles and the songs that give Him different names, but it’s one thing to hear those names, it’s another thing to know them. And I surely cannot be alone in my wondering in who God really is. So, let’s get to know God together!

Let’s learn together who God is.

My Search For Who God Is

The world is a hot mess right now. Stress is at an all time high, so is struggling, suffering, and evil. It’s hard to be a Christian in such a fallen world. And sometimes we lose our way (like the prodigal son- Luke 15:11-32) and sometimes it’s hard to find our way back. You may be struggling to find your way back. Especially once your eyes are opened and you realize how much people, the church, and world have led you astray. Or at least that’s where I’m at.

So, in order for me to find my way back and build back that relationship with God I find myself trying to get to know Him again.

Who We Know God As

Off the top of my head I can think of many names people use for God from the Bible, from songs, poetry, and more. Some of those titles for God are:

  • Elohim
  • El-Shaddai
  • Adonai
  • Abba
  • Father
  • Most High
  • Lord
  • Yahweh
  • Jehovah
  • Waymaker
  • Miracle Worker
  • Healer
  • Chain Breaker
  • Provider
  • Protector

And the list goes on. But if you don’t know God then these names don’t mean much. Great, He is a Father and miracle worker…chain breaker… healer… So how do we get to know God if we don’t know Him intimately?

Who Is God- Bible pages folded to look like a heart- homemaking for God
We need a relationship with God.

Who Is God: The Relationship

God wants a relationship with us. He always has. If you read the Bible you can see that clear as day. From God walking in the garden with Adam and Eve, to God’s forgiveness and patience of His people turning back to Him, God saving His people multiple times, and the fact He sent His Son to die for our sins. There is a reason God and the church is described as a Bride and Groom, because we are to have an intimate relationship with God. We are also described as God’s children and what parent doesn’t want to have a relationship with their child? And we can see it in other verses like:

And those are just a few verses. Reading the Bible shows that God loves and desires for us to love Him back. To not just ask Him for things, but to love Him and live for Him. And while this is easy to understand, it can be hard to achieve if you don’t spend time getting to know Him through the Bible and prayer.

Why Is It Hard To Know God?

Sometimes it feels hard to know who God is. And to sum it up, it comes down to weak teachers and a fallen world. We have some great teachers in this world, but we have many people in the church leading Christians astray. (2 Timothy 3:1-4, Acts 20:28-30, 1 John 4:1-6, Matthew 7:15-20)

It really shouldn’t be hard to know God, but the enemy wants us as far from God and grace as possible. That’s why we get distorted truths about God, watered down gospel, and why so many things are hidden from believers. It doesn’t help that our lives are busy and revolve around us and everyone else rather than God which puts us further from God because we are not spending the time needed to know Him.

I also learned recently how we see our parents, particularly our fathers will shape the way we see God. Which can also put its own barriers up when trying to get to know God.

So, all this leads us to our next few questions, how can we know God and who is God?

Who Is God- Woman sitting on a rock reading the Bible surrounded by green grass and trees- Homemaking for God
And we get that relationship through reading the Bible, prayer, and worship.

How Do We Get To Know God?

You may be sitting there wondering… but how do I get to know God? Well, you get to know God through spending time with Him. Just like you would anyone else. And to get to know God you have to spend time reading the Bible, praying, going to church, worshipping, fasting, and meditating. You have to put the time in to know God.

And I won’t lie, all that feels tedious to me sometimes. Which is horrible I know. But I get frustrated and bored with the Bible. Sometimes I don’t want to pray. I don’t always want to sing and dance and jump for joy. But we have to pray for renewed hearts, renewed minds, and wisdom.

I do desire to love God as much as He loves me. But it’s hard to get to know Him for me sometimes and even harder for me to stick to the narrow path. But I’m trying and I hope this helps you get to know Him a little better too.

So, Who Is God?

I hope to shed a little light on this for you. And this may be helpful for you, and maybe it isn’t. But for someone who is desperately searching for an answer I pray this at least leads you down the right road.

God is our Creator. He is the Ruler of all and is perfect in all ways. He is just, power, love, goodness, wisdom, and so much more.

Know God By His Character

Knowing God- Bible with round barbed wire that leaves a heart shadow- Homemaking for God
Let’s get to know God by His character.

1. God Is Just

He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.

Deuteronomy 32:4

God is a just God. He does no wrong and all His ways are right. God has time and time again shown us that He is just. When we do wrong we are punished. When people hurt his people they are punished. But never unfairly.

2. God Is Loving

But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.

Ephesians 2:4-5

God loves us. Even after we sin over and over again. He loves us and forgives us. He even gave His only Son to die for us to be the ultimate sacrifice. And despite us hurting Him day after day, He continues to love us and desires us to come back to Him.

3. God Is Truthful

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1:14

We can see that God is truth. What He says will happen. We have seen it in past prophesies as well as modern prophesies. God hates lying tongues (Proverbs 6:16-19) and He is just and perfect. So therefore He must be truth as you can’t have truth without the other two.

4. God Is Holy

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

1 John 1:5

God is good and everything He makes is good. (1 Timothy 4:4-5, Genesis 1:31). As said before, if He is just and perfect which means He has to be good. Someone who is dark and evil cannot be Light or just. There is no corruption in God.

God is merciful to us.

5. God Is Mercy

Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.

Luke 6:36

It’s plain and clear that the Lord is merciful. And so should we be. God gives us mercy day in and day out and we should be so grateful, because we have all fallen short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23).

6. God Is Grace

For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:17

What does God’s grace mean? It’s defined as undeserved favor. We don’t deserve God’s grace and it cannot be earned, but is given freely so we can build a relationship with Him.

7. God Judges Sin

The boastful shall not stand before your eyes; you hate all evildoers.

Psalm 5:5

This verse may seem confusing since we hear God loves us all and God loves the world. Which He does. God loves the world and He loves the righteous, but He does hate the sinner. God hates sin. Why would be be happy and joyous for someone who repeatedly reject Him? If you are not saved, not repentant, and thrive in wickedness, you serve the devil, not God. It’s not the absolute and wicked hatred that people have, but a righteous hatred. We see in the Old Testament where God destroyed entire cities, but saved a few or saved even the wicked (Nineveh) because of people changing. God loves the world, but He hates sin. For a better explanation, check out this post.

8. God Is Forgiveness

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:9

God’s forgiveness is one of the biggest blessings. We don’t deserve His forgiveness. We really don’t, but He gives it to the repentant Christian because He loves us and gives us His grace and mercy.

9. God Is Spirit And Is Intangible

God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.

John 4:24

God is not a physical person or a limited creature, He is not restricted the way we are. He isn’t restricted to just seeing, hearing, or being in one place. God is Spirit. God fills the universe (Jeremiah 23:23-24). In the entire context of the chapter, Jesus was teaching a Samaritan woman this because she was limiting God. She was worried about the right place to worship. This leads to mindless and ritualistic worship rather than focusing on the substance of our worship.

10. God Is Three In One

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

2 Corinthians 13:14

God sent His only Son to die for our sins. Jesus was God in the flesh. (Luke 1:26-38, Isaiah 9:6, Matthew 16:13-16, Mark 8:27-30) and God sent the Holy Spirit so that we can be can be empowered, guide us, and console us.

12. God Is Infinite

Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

1 Timothy 1:17

God says “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” (Revelation 22:13) God created the world (Genesis) and the world ends with Him (Revelation). God was there before the earth was created and even after it ends He will be there. He is in all places at once. (Psalm 139)

13. God Is Incomparable

“How great you are, Sovereign LORD! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.

2 Samuel 7:22

There is none like the Lord. Time and time again we have seen false gods fail (1 Kings 18:20-40). There is only 1 God who created the earth (Genesis) and 1 God who will reign (Revelation).

14. God Is Unchanging

I the Lord do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.

Malachi 3:6

God was talking to the Israelites here, but the sentiment stays the same. The Lord does not change. He is as He was. I know there is this belief that God was suddenly “soft” in the New Testament, but even then God did not change. God is unchanging.

15. He Knows Everything

Great is our Lord and mighty in power; His understanding has no limit.

Psalms 147:5

God knows everything. He is infinite as we saw previously and He has no limits and that includes what he knows. God is everlasting, Creator of the ends of the earth who does not grow tired or weary and His understanding no one can fathom. (Isaiah 40:28)

16. God Has All Power and Authority

Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: “Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns.

Revelation 19:6

Our God is Almighty. We have seen it in the Old Testament and the New Testament. There is nothing God cannot do. He is amazing, all powerful and no one can compare.

17. God Created The World

Genesis 1 tells us how God created the world. Each day for 6 days He created something new and on the 7th day God rested.

18. Sustains The World

He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Colossians 1:17

God keeps all things going. The Greek construction of this particular verse means “all things continue” or that all things “endure”. God is needed to keep everything going.

19. He Is Executing His Eternal Plan

Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, for he chose us in advance, and he makes everything work out according to his plan.

Ephesians 1:11

Everything happens according to His plan. God has a plan for each and everyone of us (Jeremiah 29:11). He has a plan for humanity, for this world, for the spiritual world and everything is working out according to His will.

20. Christ Redeems Man

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.” He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

Galatians 3:13-14

Jesus died so all people Jew and Gentile could be redeemed. So that we could all come to know God through Him and receive the Holy Spirit to guide us.

Jesus draws us near to God.

21. Jesus Draws People To God

No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day.

John 6:44

Jesus came to lead us to God. He is the bridge between us and God. Instead of sacrificing different animals, produce, oils and the such…Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice. That means we are covered in His blood and can reach God easier.

22. Disciplines His Beloved Children

…because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.

Hebrews 12:6

God disciplines His children. We live in a world that doesn’t want discipline, corrections, or consequences, but God disciplines His children because He loves us. Just like a parent would correct a child for doing wrong. It isn’t because it makes them happy to do so, or shouldn’t, but because they want their child to learn to do better.

23. He Will Judge The World

Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

Revelation 20:11-15

In the end, God judges everyone. God judges His children and the sinner alike. Everything we have done on this world and everything we have said or didn’t do will be judged.

24. God Became Man

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth

John 1:14

God became Man to be a sacrifice and Savior to His children. That is who Jesus Christ is.

25. Jesus Became The Bridge Between God and Man

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 14:6

The only way to God is through Jesus Christ. We must accept Him as our Savior and live according to the word of the Bible.

For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus…

1 Timothy 2:5

There is only on mediator between us and God, which is Jesus Christ. He bridged that gap.

Jesus leads us to salvation through His sacrifice and teachings.

26. Jesus Leads Us To Salvation

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace

Ephesians 1:7

God’s grace is something that is given to us and we can never earn. Same with His mercy and forgiveness. Jesus’ blood has redeemed us and bridged that gap so that we may know God and have eternal life with God.

27. Reconciliation With God

I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.

John 15:15

What is reconciliation? Reconciliation is the “restoration of friendly relations.” Jesus came to reconcile us with God.

For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!

Romans 5:10

If we aren’t following God then we are following the devil. That would make us God’s enemy. But Christ reconciled us and bled for us in sacrifice, so that we may turn from that life and turn towards God, not as His enemy.

28. Eternal Salvation

Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.

2 Timothy 2:10

Christ died so that we might spend eternity with God. He washed us clean with His blood. God loves us so much, that He wants to spend eternity with you and I. How amazing is that?

Know You Know Who God Is

Who Is God- painted rocks with cross, fish, and open tomb- homemaking for God
It’s time we started seriously trying to get to know God and living for Him.

Now you have a basic understanding of who God is. God is all powerful, amazing, loving, just, wrath, He is everything that is good. And it’s important to have a relationship with Him. He doesn’t want someone who just says a prayer, but lives a live of sin. He wants someone who is going to live for Him. Again, the relationship is described as Him (the Groom) and the church (the Bride). (Revelation 21:9-11) What groom would want a bridge who spends no time with them, only asks for things, and then hurts Him on the daily?

To be a follower means having a relationship with God first and foremost, but also taking up your cross, sacrificing, growing fruits of the Spirit, using your gifts to lead others to Him. We are so blessed to have a loving and merciful God who wants good things for us.

Do you want to know Jesus? I encourage you to take time to read at least Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John of the Bible and learn the life of Jesus. I encourage you to take time to read the whole Bible so you can have an understanding of who God really is and how good He is.

Coming To God

If you are ready to come to God, surrender your life to Him, then I’d like to pray with you. But before you do, you may want to check out this post about What It Really Means To Be Saved. Being saved doesn’t mean the hardships go away, it means you have a God to hang onto during them who will give you everlasting life once you dedicate your life to Him. A good God who wants the best for you. If you’re ready to take that step, pray with me:

Dear Heavenly Father,

I come to you today and ask you forgive me of my sins and wicked ways. I pray for a new heart and a new mind, ones that are focused on you. Soften my heart, O’ Lord, don’t leave me in my own desires, but fill me with Your desires. I repent of my sins, I walk away from my sinful life and pray you give me a new life in You. Lord, I believe that Jesus Christ was sent by You and died on the cross for my sins and was raised on the third day and I accept Him as my Savior and I believe this in my heart and my soul. I surrender my life to You, O’ Lord. Wash me clean. Without you, I cannot be saved, and I gratefully receive your gift of Salvation. Please fill me with the Holy Spirit, come into my heart O’ Lord. I pray this in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
